Bringing Attention to the Importance of Exercise… Nationwide

May 29th to May 31st were truly historic “days on the hill” in Ottawa for the fitness industry. Fitness professionals, medical professionals, technology, and registration bodies all came together for the first time to promote the importance of preventative health care and propose a united solution.

Representatives from all sectors advocated for the Prescription to Get Active (RxTGA) program, which already has many successful pilot projects across Canada. Together, the team presented to over 25 government officials on the advantages this program would contribute to Canada’s health care. This program allows doctors to prescribe exercise to their patients; then patients can fill that prescription by visiting https://www.prescriptiontogetactive.com/ and utilizing the tools available (i.e.: technology, memberships to participating health clubs, etc.).

In the long run, we believe that preventative care is more effective than “sick care” and would like to see a greater effort from the Government to provide incentives geared towards preventative health measures, essentially saving net healthcare costs. We believe tax incentives, such as the Fitness Tax Credit, when used in conjunction with RxTGA and Registered Exercise Professionals, will also ensure that long term behaviour change occurs.

With the help of our government relations firm, Sussex Strategy Group, we have been successful so far to bring attention to our goals. However, coming towards an October election, in order to keep our initiatives in the forefront, we need to keep Sussex Strategy Group on retainer. In order to do this and continue lobbying the government, WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT.

Fitness Industry Council of Canada is currently collecting contributions that will go straight to our government lobbying efforts. This is a huge opportunity for the fitness industry as we work towards encouraging the government to provide Canadians with incentives for a healthy lifestyle such as exercise programs (RxTGA) and rewards (Fitness Tax Credit).

To contribute and support to this initiative, please contact Trisha Sarker, FIC Executive Director, at tsarker@ficdn.ca. Any contribution will significantly make a difference and add value to the future health of the nation.

Renovate, Refresh, Renew

A revered long time club reinvents itself with a fresh and modern approach In 2017, Club Meadowvale, a decades-old and well-loved Mississauga, Ontario, fitness club, closed its doors to business. The Hilton Meadowvale, which housed the club, was anxious to find a new operator. “We needed an organization with a track record and the high standards that would be beneficial for our guests," says Peter Eriksson, the hotel’s general manager.

While several parties showed interest in assuming the space, Wynn Fitness, then a three-club chain, was the winning organization.

Make it work for everyone
From the start, Wynn Fitness and Hilton understood that their relationship would be mutually beneficial: guests at the Hilton would use the club free of charge while Wynn Fitness members would enjoy the Hilton’s indoor and outdoor pools.

“We don’t have pools at our other locations, so this was a huge selling feature,” says Wynn Fitness CEO Markus Lanz.

When conversations between the two organizations began, several key questions arose:
• How would they revive the 1980s facility that had seen no upgrades for a decade?
• How would they provide continuous club access to Hilton guests during the renovation process?
• What would be done with the tennis courts and large bubble that covered them?
• How would they entice former club members to return to the redesigned club?

pic1 Strength Training to Help Aging Bones

by Patricia Clark

After the age of 40, we lose 0.5% to 1% of the bone mass in our skeleton each year. A diagnosis of osteoporosis means that bones have weakened to the point where they could break from a simple fall.

Osteoporosis affects about 1.4 million Canadians. Many clients in your facility could be at risk of acquiring osteoporosis, or may have already been diagnosed. One in three women and one in five men over the age of 50 will have a fracture due to osteoporosis at some point, often caused by a fall. Fractures can lead to other health problems and loss of function, or independence. There are some simple exercises that you can incorporate into your programs to benefit these individuals. Not only are they good for prevention of osteoporosis, but they help to build overall strength which is a key factor in maintaining health and independence as we age.

pic1 Cool Ways to Stay Active This Summer

by Lauren Walker

It is a time for making plans with friends, spending time at the cottage and sitting around campfire. Your routine certainly changes! People like to take the summer off from exercise. I think it’s important that while you’re spending time with family and friends, it’s important to make time for your health and wellness. If you cannot reach the gym that’s okay, there’s plenty to do outdoors!

Here are a few ideas to get involved in activities this summer:

1) Play in the Water: Swimming is great exercise and is non weight bearing on your joints. Whether you’re paddling on a kayak, canoeing, paddle boarding or using a pedal boat it call counts. Get out there and enjoy the water this summer!

2) Take a Ride: Nothing better than getting out and enjoying a trail in the forest or along the water. Whatever your environment, use a bike to get around instead of driving. It’s easy. It’s free and it’s fun! It’s a great way to include activity in to your day.
