pic5Canadian Fitness Industry Leadership Award 2018

Congratulations to Chuck Lawson

Fitness Industry Council of Canada is proud to announce Chuck Lawson as the 2018 Canadian Fitness Industry Leadership Award recipient.

Chuck Lawson entered the fitness business in 1987 by purchasing a Gold’s Gym in Langley, B.C. New to the industry, Lawson struggled to get the business started. He was all about lifting weights and training, but eventually he had to figure out a way to sell memberships. Fortunately, other Gold’s Gym owners assisted and mentored him. Once he hired a sales force, things started looking up. He eventually built the club up to $25,000 a month in dues while paying $2,000 in rent.

A few years later, Lawson heard about the success of some women’s clubs in Texas and was inspired to open his first women-only club in Abbotsford, B.C. called Just Ladies Fitness. It was a huge success, leading him to open three more clubs in White Rock, Surrey, and Delta over the next 30 months. Over the years, Just Ladies Fitness expanded to 13 locations in B.C. Lawson and his team had to fight many trademark and copyright issues as many other women’s clubs were popped up and tried to use the Just Ladies Fitness name.

pic5TECHNOGYM becomes first fitness equipment manufacturer to release Apple GymKit

Technogym cardio equipment is compatible with Apple Watch using Apple GymKit technology. After the first ever fitness club in the world offering Apple GymKit compatibility on Technogym equipment launched last November in Sydney (Australia), today, Technogym now features an installed base of more than 5,000 Apple GymKit-enabled pieces of equipment in hundreds of fitness clubs all over the world.

pic1 David vs Goliath – Surviving 17 Years from Scratch – P23: New Competition

by Gino Arcaro

One of the biggest decisions you have to make in the fitness business is how to respond to new competition. What you do when a new gym opens or a new personal trainer starts a business to compete with you determines the direction of your own business.

Since my gym, X Fitness, opened 17 years ago as an independent start-up, an unusual number of competitors have emerged. I have a lot of experience with new competition. I have attracted new competition in every profession I have worked in. I had minimal competition when I started writing law enforcement textbooks in 1992. Competitors dramatically increased within a decade. The same happened in my football coaching career. Every new expansion team I coached from scratch attracted new competition with the following five years. The same happened after I started a podcast from scratch. The same happened after X Fitness opened.

pic1 Career Paths- Embracing Opportunities

by Paula Comfort

Interview with Mike Tann, National Sales Manager for Orangetheory Fitness Canada.

What initially attracted you to the fitness industry?
Like most who competed in sports, I started training in the gym at a young age. That said, my journey into the fitness industry was a coincidence! A part-time gig to transition to University and ease my mother’s concerns embarked me on a journey I am forever grateful for.

How did you find your first role in the fitness industry?
I was shopping for a new gym membership and waited 15 minutes in the lobby to meet with a membership rep. Needless to say, I left. As I was driving home I spotted “Mansfield Athletic Clubs”. It turned out to be a beautiful gym catering to a corporate crowd. As I was filling out the membership documents I thought to myself, maybe I could give them a few hours a week and save myself from paying the membership. If I liked it, it would be a great part-time job during University, and my mother would approve.  I met with the club manager & started working a week later.

At what point did you realize you could have a “career” in the industry?
I received a request to meet the new CEO of the Mansfield Clubs as I was finishing my bachelors abroad and getting ready for Investment Banking interviews. I convinced them to let me manage one of their locations once my semester was over. We turned around the location within a year, and I was asked to do the same at their flagship. That’s when it all came together.

The owner of the chain was Leonard Schlemm, Co-Founder of 24 hrs fitness. He and his wife Annick-Isabelle (CEO of the Mansfield at the time) gave me the opportunity to be entrepreneurial with the clubs.
