IHRSA 2018 Preview

San Diego, California, the site of IHRSA’s 37th Annual International Convention & Trade Show, has acquired its share of descriptive monikers over the years. It is, among other things, the “Sun Dog” and “the City in Motion.” Both fit well with what will be taking place March 21-24 at the San Diego Convention Center. Sunny San Diego will, we’re sure, provide the perfect weather, and IHRSA and the city’s rich fitness community will, we guarantee, provide a wealth of rewarding activities.

An estimated 10,000 industry practitioners and enthusiasts—club owners, operators, developers, fitness professionals, investors, researchers, and media representatives—will converge on this singular event from some 80 countries around the world.

Whether you’re talking about the keynote speakers, the other presenters, or the associate members on the trade show floor—all are there to share insights, ideas, and fresh information about new trends, programs, products, services, club operations, and business models.

The more than 100 club owners, consultants, and other authorities who will be overseeing the educational sessions, assisted by some 350 exhibitors, will stimulate your thinking about how to hone your competitive skills—and advantage—to a razor’s sharpness. They’ll also challenge you to examine your business, your life, and, even, the world in a completely different way.

As always, the convention and trade show offers a unique opportunity to reconnect with colleagues and old friends, and embark on rewarding new relationships, as you toast the industry’s achievements, savor its perpetual vitality, and consider what lies ahead. One of the principal forums for doing so is the 13th Annual BASH for Augie’s Quest, which will take place on Friday, March 23. It may be a fete to raise funds to find a cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, but it’s also the industry’s most impressive and rewarding party of the year.

The Venue
Though IHRSA 2018, itself, is the principal attraction, San Diego serves as the perfect setting. “It’s easy to understand why San Diego is one of our favorite venues for the convention and trade show,” observes Joe Moore, the president and CEO of IHRSA. “It has great weather, the lure of the ocean, a long list of must-see attractions, great food, and a healthy fitness lifestyle.

“That’s why we continue to return to the city, and why so many people from throughout the world are so eager to join us there.” San Diego is known for its beaches, parks, and balmy climate, and the convention center and adjacent hotels provide breathtaking views of the water. The historic Gaslamp Quarter, a lively downtown neighborhood celebrated for its nightlife, is located just a few blocks away. The city hosts countless clubs, bars, and cocktail lounges, and restaurants with tempting local, national, and international menus. San Diego craft beer is on tap, and wine lovers will definitely want to schedule a visit to the Vin de Syrah Wine Parlor, an underground, fairly-tale-like urban lounge.

pic1 David vs Goliath – Surviving 16 Years From Scratch – P21: Fraud + Gym Security

by Gino Arcaro

It’s 2018 and some people still think that independent gyms are not serious businesses that can be taken advantage of. One of our top ten problems at X Fitness has been people entering by fraud and false pretenses. The two most common ways of fraudulently entering has been:

(i) a non-member using someone else’s card, and
(ii) a member bringing in a non-member.

The main reason why people enter fraudulently is their attitude toward independent gyms. Some people just don’t take gyms seriously. Some people believe we are a charity or a government-owned recreation facility, open to the public for free. The second reason is a weak conscience. Some people just don’t know right from wrong and want to rip your off.

Our policy saved our gym from going broke a long time ago:
1. Investigate each incident thoroughly. Never ignore any incident of trespassing. Never, ever let it slide. Just one incident that you let slide sets a precedent. Word will spread at the speed of sound that your business is joke. You will become a target of illegal entry again. Recidivism is guaranteed.

pic1 2018 - Time to Reset the Interview Process

by Paula Comfort

Traditional job interviews are a poor predictor of job performance. Most interviewers as the ‘classic’ questions which have been completely rehearsed by the candidates. An example of this is, “So, tell me a bit about your strengths?” Most interviewers are not well trained and are biased when making their selection decisions.

At 360impact Group, we have done tremendous research and have reinvented the interview process to assist clients for a more efficient and successful hiring results.

Traditional interviews are still valuable however, you need to have the right employee(s) conducting the interview and asking the RIGHT questions. Old school style is out. Where traditional interviews fall short is the soft skills and candidates potential improvement points. It is really hard to determine disorganization or grit during a traditional interview.

During traditional interviews you also need to train your team on asking uncomfortable questions. For example-“ If I called your last boss and asked her what you are not good at, what would she say?” No one should be rude or disrespectful but interviewing is a skill-your team needs training. Red flags will be raised if you do this right.

Some of the new tools 360impact is using are soft skill assessments, job auditions and video interviews.

pic1 Health Habits create lasting results!

by Frances Michaelson

As we are well on our way into 2018, I hope you are not feeling disappointed, yet again , that you did not stick to your new goals called resolutions . This would not make sense to me which is the reason I do not blog about resolutions in the first place . They are not designed to last ….what is, are creating healthy habits!

Research has proven that it takes 14-21 days to create a new habit. Healthy habits require baby steps to make significant changes in our life. Fad Diets don’t work! They are based on radical behaviour changes that are not sustainable. They depend too much on willpower, which is a limited resource. Setting unrealistic goals can only lead to failure. Health and fitness success requires baby steps to achieve small and measurable goals. Celebrating these small wins gives you the motivation to take the next step.

The key is to initiate one daily nutritional change a week, rather than an entire food agenda. Changing a habit or initiating a new one requires a routine, like brushing your teeth. We brush our teeth at the same time every day. It’s something we were taught at an early age so it becomes a natural habit. It is hard to break. It doesn’t feel right of we don’t do it. Routines create habits and habits are hard to break. The idea is to only change one small part of your routine each week.
