With the spring season , many health and fitness enthusiasts are eager to discuss a detox plan with their trainers or search google for the latest recipe . There is no better time to do a good clean up as nature supports this process. As a naturopath, I do feel however, that too many people jump on this opportunity without enough solid information and can make a mistake by following a ‘trendy celebrity detox” . We are all different and for this reason, everyone should contact a licensed health care practitioner before talking a cleanse in their own hands .
Here are some tips about why a liver cleanse is beneficial for everyone . As the largest organ in our body , our liver is our filter . Digestive issues , skin problems, headaches , migraines, acid reflux , are all by products of a liver not making enough good concentrated bile . This is mostly because we eat a diet too rich in processed and acid ( cooked ) foods. A good quality bile is extremely important for the following reasons:-
1/ Bile is used to neutralize the acids that are coming from your stomach . This is what protects the wall of your small intestine from being damaged . If the acids are not neutralized, this can cause leaky gut
2/Bile is used to break down fat into fatty acids . All of our hormones are produced by essential fatty acids . If you are not properly digesting your fats , you will not have enough essential fatty acids . These E.F.A. ‘s also make the membrane of every cell . If your body is not getting enough essential fatty acids , you will weaken your cells
3/Bile is also used to detoxify itself . The more your liver gets congested , the poorer the quality of the bile
4/ Bile is also necessary to break down your fat soluble vitamins and make them available. These are important for your immune sysem
5/ Bile salts are important to help maintain a clean intestime by killing parasites , bacteria in food etc
With all this in mind , it is important to make wise choices with your diet becuase if the liver cells are not getting ( being fed) what the need ( vitamins and minerals ) through a diet rich in food coming from the earth , they will be lacking the energy to produce a good quality bile . Beets, dandelion greens, garlic, lemons are all good foods to add to your diet at this time , but please note that if you decide to try a liver cleanse , do it right and seek out professional help !
