After nearly 4 years of a cat and mouse negotiation process, UK Active have reached an agreement to reform its exercise tariff, which covers the use of PPL recorded music as an accompaniment to fitness classes.
The main difficulty has always relied on the policing of the tariff’s and the fact that many of the European countries are not compliant, yet the UK Active Industry Body (formerly known as the FIA) have taken proactive and constructive actions to work in the best interests of the industry, whilst acknowledging that something had to be done compared to the old tariffs.
It will mean that the sole responsibility for holding a valid PPL licence for group exercise classes in fitness centres will on the operators of those facilities. Instructors will only be required to hold a valid PPL licence for any classes they hold in premises other than fitness facilities, such as hired halls and offices.
The new tariff `Exercise to Music’, is due to be brought into effect on May 1st 2013. The tariff will start at 95p ($1.50 Canadian Dollar), rising to £1.25 ($1.95) in May 2014, £1.50 ($2.40) in May 2015, £1.75 ($2.75) in May 2016 and hopefully peaking at £1.88 ($2.95) per class in 2017.
A detailed relationship hinged a lot on the fact that UK Active will help with administering the collection of the tariffs which will in turn be able to provide discount membership to UK Active to help add value to the organisation.
Whether the delayed negotiations and `change of attitude’ have hinged on the result of Fitness Australia’s `win’ having to put up an aggressive fight is a matter of personal opinion. However, one thing for certain is that the UK Active Board and it’s members were supported by some of the largest chains and organisations in the country.
