The holidays are upon us! I don’t know about you, but it can definitely throw off my routine. The added Christmas parties tempt us with sugary treats. You may experience the added stress of buying gifts which we all know can make us a little anxious. The holidays should be spent enjoying time together with family. We must help encourage our clients to set aside time to be active and make wise food choices. Just because it is Christmas doesn’t mean we shouldn’t stick to our fitness goals.
The greatest gift you can give to others is making time for yourself. The healthier you are, the more time and energy you have for family and friends. So how can we help our clients make time during the hectic holidays?
Here are my top three:
1) Encourage Consistency: If you know your client is more successful on a structured program, my advice is to encourage consistency over the holidays. Make appointments and encourage your client to keep them. If your schedules don’t happen to line up, suggest a group class you think they might enjoy. Make it easier for them to show up.
2) Set Limitations: We can all be tempted by those sugary treats. Help your client set a reasonable limitation. Total up all the extra calories those delicious treats have. This may help your client understand how much extra work they have to do to get it off.
3) Be Creative: Help your client look for ways to keep active if they can’t get in to the gym. There are opportunities all around us. Work with them to set aside a certain time in their day and make a list of activities. For example: Take the dog for a walk, shovel the driveway or build a snowman with your kids.
Holidays should be spent enjoying the company of family and friends. We also need to help our clients make time to be active. With these helpful tips, we can help our clients stay on track.
Happy Healthy Holidays to all!
